Take a Sneak Peek!
Build a Shaker Table
This 12-week class introduces you to more complex woodworking operations as you construct a cherry Shaker-style table with a beautiful book-matched top.
It requires previous experience, which you can meet by taking Intro to Fine Woodworking or our Basics Bundle, which consists of Wood Theory, Milling Rough Lumber, and Table Saw Techniques. If think you have equivalent experience, please contact us so we can make sure that this is the right place for you to start.
As in Intro to Fine Woodworking, the workshop begins with milling rough lumber, but with a greater emphasis on efficiently laying out the parts to maximize your raw materials. This is also a great opportunity to hone your skills on the jointer and planer.
You will use the bandsaw to re-saw the lumber for your tabletop and learn how to joint and edge glue your board to make larger panels necessary for major furniture pieces. The workshop then progresses to using jigs on the table saw to cut tapered legs. Finally, you will use the mortising machine and table saw to create mortise and tenon joinery and use chisels to fine-tune your joints.
If you want to delve more deeply into the traditional art of using hand tools, take a look at our Sharpening Hand Tools and Introduction to Hand Cut Joinery workshops.
Skills Learned
Reading basic plans, completing cutlists, material optimization, use of the band saw, jointer, planer, table saw and mortiser, mortise and tenon joinery, chisel work, hand sanding.
